Transistors finding....

Post by beaton.r »

Just getting involved in a few builds.....where's the best place to find transistors? Not necessarily faerie gold hens teeth type ones, but just some standard good muff types (BC239C), FF's, TB's.... :tu: :box:

Unless you can source them locally, eBay is still the best way to go.

I see people buying matched sets from dealer at premium prices. Not sure if that’s the way to go since we all have our own idea of what sounds best right?

Just be sure to buy more than the minimum number required for your pedal so you can pick the ones that work best for you.

If you're building Tone Benders, Fuzz Tones, etc., transistor selection can be a huge PITA, requiring dozens of pieces to roll through. Unless you're interested in buying unsorted bags, you may want to go with SmallbearElec or a trusted Ebay supplier like LIC for matched sets.

For generic silicon stuff where gain isn't as important, SmallbearElec and Ebay.

If you enjoy hunting, check out HAMFESTs (amateur radio clubs flea markets). http://www.arrl.org/hamfests-and-conventions-calendar

Or go that route. Thing is, if you’re into building your own pedals you probably want to tune them yourself too right?

I visit HAM fests sometimes but even there, NOS transistors are rare! Good place for finding tubes though.

Maybe try some of the Russian germaniums, they can be easier to source in quantity and give decent results

I have a wide variety of silicon and germaniums that are suitable for pedals. It may be a bit down the list (and I need to update it) but I have some in Third Party Direct. Probably better value if you are in the US due to shipping.
