I think if you keep the mid range instrument's bass frequencies toned down, perhaps with a high pass filter on the mic pre-amp, keep the mix reasonably uncluttered and avoid a major clash between the bass and kick drum's frequencies (I usually mess around with the bass amp's mic positioning) then the resultant bottom end belch from a superfuzz is beautifully malevolent wondrous thing, imo of course!
Admittedly much more difficult to acheive in a live setting though...
