PICTURES OF BALDWIN BURNS BUZZAROUND FUZZ

Post by Graham »

Maybe these ought to be on the Data Dump section - what I'll do is put some pics up here and look towards a more thorough reference set over there.

This is the pedal that David used to clone the Fuzzarounds:

When I finally found one of these last year it turned up in wonderful working condition but it had an incorrect replacement footswitch so knowing that the Captain was in need of getting his hands on one for the final voicing / tuning of the Fuzzaround project sent it away for a bit of a holiday in sunny Rotherham and asked Dave to go through the pedal thoroughly and take care of any problems that he found.

He replaced the switch (which worked but was lightweight and too small for the pedal) with one of the correct type - used but in perfect working order. There wasn't anything else that he needed to do - he told me that he checked that all the components were on spec (which they were), there were signs of the casing having been affected somewhat by damp at some time in the past - this has not caused any problems with the pedals function just the cosmetics internally - we discussed re-finishing the case but decided against it - I am old school in alway doing my best to maintain and protect originality of all my gear and if repairs are ever needed (and it happens - I do use ALL my gear as well as often lending to friends) then will go to great lengths to source and use correct components of the appropriate age - even down to the solder where poss - fortunately our Captain feels exactly the same way !! Hoorah !!

Anyway no other work was needed so it stayed up there for a while being used as the reference that all the others were voiced against - and now it's back home along with a wonderful DAM Fuzzaround - ser no 2 that I had some months back when the first lot came out AND a recently arrived and exceptionally generous gift from David of another one-off special 1 of 1 Fuzzaround that he made for me after some discussion that we had over what affect (if any) using different trannies in them would have. More of that in due course - but basically you can fill in one of the secret secret stash group albeit mine is somewhat different to every other pedal apart from Dave own red one which also uses different trannies (though not the same as in mine).

Anyway that's enough gobbing off - better make a start on the pics

The pictures above show the condition that the pedal arrived in - these next show it after a visit to Daves magic grotto.

The eagle eyed will spot a difference between the first and second pictures that follow - the first one was taken to show the facia when I first got it and if you look hard you can see a small crack on the bottom right hand corner - in the next shot which was taken several months later fokkowing its visit to meet all its grandkiddies at David's house the corner has parted company - almost certainly in the box and the chip was lost when I disposed iof the packing material -- I want to be clear that in no way do I hold Dave responsible - I knew it was loose and forgot to let him know - a pain in the arse but worse things happen at sea and all that!!

Also - as you will see some of these brightly lit shots make the corrosion look absolutely dreadful - it is not that bad at all in real life - doesn't affect the performance or external aesthetics at all so as akready said dave and I agreed it was best left rather than refinish the insided of the pedal! I am very happy that was the proper decision to take..

One clue on the "secret" one it has super powers due to its special triple hearts which "match and drive the pedal rather well" as it happens (you'll get no more from me for a day or two -see if anyone can work it out!)

Greedy Graham :headpop:

Oh and yes you can bet your arses that I will be going for one of the other "colours" as well!!

:headpop: :headpop: :headpop:

ps sorry if I have repeated the odd pic its very late and I'm knackered :hihi:

FOOTNOTE:

The serial number of this pedal is 7224 - when considering the actual number of original pedals that might have been made it would be an easy trap to fall into by saying that there had been thousands made. That is patently not the case evidenced simply by the extremely small numbers of existing pedals known.

I am aware of three others - Carl G** has one - #7083 and Graeme (who has a brilliant demo of his BBA on youtube) owns #7137 plus I also know of #7273 (have lost track of who that one belongs to maybe it's Tony L in NY) anyway thats four - we also know that Robert Fripp is reputed to still have his two and I have heard of two possibly three others in collectors hands - so perhaps 9 accounted for - my instinct is that less than a hundred were made and maybe only a couple dozen survive..

One other possible interpretation is that the numbers all begin with 7 - if we were to discount that or maybe even say it represented the year (1967? which would throw up its own questions) then we have a range of numbers from 083 through to 273 so were there any reason behind that idea AND if the numbering system were sequential AND no other Burns pedals were included (bear in mindthat Burns were reputed to have also offered a treble booster - a pedal that I believe I owned as my first pedal back in the late sixties) - plenty of unknowns but either way that system would allow for less than 300 units having been built - I could be persuaded to that although feel confident that the numbers remaining should be a lot higher (i.e more available) than is clearly the case..

ALL QUESTIONS - What I love about this pedal - the same as the Mk1 and 2 and the Zonks - they are all so enigmatic - considering it was only a relative short time ago it amazes and confounds me that so few can be found and that there is so little definitive information available

IT MAKES ME DETERMINED TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS LEFT BEGGING - I AM FULLY CONFIDENT THAT THE COLLECTIVE EFFORTS OF THIS FORUMS MEMBERSHIP CAN CRACK IT EVENTUALLY - NOW THAT WOULD REALLY BE A RESULT!!

Incidentally the 100k pot codes are awkward to make sense of - but they are either 127 7203 008 or 277 203 008 or it might be (1) 227 203 00 8 - I have done my best to get some clear pics - try downloading them and blowing them up on your pc .

Hmm, that Buzzaround seems familiar, is it the one that was on ebay awhile ago which caused a big thread and some talk of us pitching in to buy it for Dave to make a replica? :badteeth:

Agh! I didn't do it! Please no, not the fingers! :badteeth:

Yeah I did notice it was cracked but didn't think it was at breaking point so didn't think it needed mentioning as such...plus I didn't want to cause any more distress after the mention the corrosion inside the pedal. Which is safe for a good few years as yet as its clear of the electronics.

One of the last pics I took. I didn't do it! :paranoid: :errr: :hihi: Btw - Great pics there Graham!

Greetings all!
Just thought I'd register and say Hi.

I was delighted to see my name mentioned in the above thread about known Buzzaround owners. Im the guy who posted a video of my BBA on youtube a few months ago. At the time I was unaware just how rare the pedal actually is! I knew they were scarce but not that scarce!
I had seen a picture of a Buzzaround in the Analog Man book in the "Hen's Teeth" section and I remember reading an article about the guy who produced King Crimson who was pictured with a Buzzaround in his collection. Other than that, I had never seem another.

Mine was bought by a guy from a junk shop 15 years ago. He took it to a friend of mine for repair. My friend (better leave him nameless) told him his pedal was obsolete and asked if he could keep it for spare parts as it was pretty worthless!!! He then repaired it, traced the circuit and called me to ask if I would take it off his hands for £40. He had the schematic on file and could always build another if he fancied. So, I bought it as I was already into collecting vintage stompers. I was lucky.

I will post some pictures of it here if you guys are interested.
Graeme.

Here we go then. You may notice from the pics that the Sustain pot and footswitch appear to be replacements. These modifications/repairs were done before I came to own the pedal.
When I opened the case before taking these shots, I looked closely and noticed that the Input socket has also been replaced with a modern RS socket. Bummer! I never knew about that one!
Finally, the screw/nut that holds the base together with the casing has never been a good fit. Could that be a replacement too?
If anybody out there has any old spares or can advise me where I could find replacements I would be very grateful! I will gladly pay the going rate for parts to help restore this Buzzaround.

Okay... enjoy the pics Buzz-fans!
