^ Yeah, that's Gary Quackenbush, who died a few years back. Fucking great player. But turns out he's not using a fuzz pedal (or ANY pedal) to get that sound. It's come up before, with the man himself saying he went through a Vox Super Beatle (solid state) amp straight into the recording console: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=12098&p=250624&hil ... sh#p250331

That's some great info HorseyBoy! Pretty insane that he didn't use a dedicated fuzz to achieve those tones, I'm sure he fooled a lot of people including me...although the modded Vox seems to act more or less like a fuzz circuit, and certainly sounds like a fuzz. I've dug SRC for years, thanks for thatHorseyBoy wrote:^ Yeah, that's Gary Quackenbush, who died a few years back. Fucking great player. There is fuzz effect in those Super Beatle amps, so the use of the head with line out is a kind of fuzz pedal (if the fuzz was engaged)... in a very large enclosure.

Yep, he says he used the built-in fuzz on "Exile" and another track and for the rest (including, presumably, "Black Sheep") he used the built-in mid-range boost.Philip wrote:There is fuzz effect in those Super Beatle amps, so the use of the head with line out is a kind of fuzz pedal (if the fuzz was engaged)... in a very large enclosure.
It's interesting to me that it seems like he always stuck with solid state amps, right through his career. Just goes to show that it's the player, not the gear, that makes the sound, and that the song is always paramount. Thing I love about Gary Quackenbush is that every note he played was in the service of the song.

Ok, i don't think there's even a fuzz tone on this track, but it's just too cool to not post!
