Hi! The noise gate is part of how the distortion works - not a seperate thing. The circuit is adapted from the mighty John Hollis' Crash Sync circuit, based on a 555 time chip.
Yes it would be nice to put a proper power switch on it...

Yes - the bluebox! That thing is just mental... Something that creates a squarewave from an input signal - a useful thing...
