1977 SRS EQ / Exciter (fuzz)
so this one is another weird/random fuzz for the collection, that came as a result of a (possibly reluctant ) trade with Bart/discofreq...
The SRS EQ Exciter!
This little guy came from a random ebay auction which listed it as having a "smooth boost with a subtle eq".
What I do know is he was wayyyyyyyyy off, but other than that, I got very little to go on as to the history and background of SRS as a pedal company:
*This pedal and the SRS "VCO Disco" came from an estate auction in Toledo, OH.
*It was built in a BUD box enclosure which were also based out of Ohio.
*It was made during or around 1977 going by the pot codes.
*The seller told me he purchased a bunch of audio equipment from an estate sale and it was originally used by
Johnny & the Hurricanes, who's career seems to predate this pedal by about 15 years.
but according to wikipedia, "Johnny" toured with a backing band until 2005!
So I guess there could be some validity to this.

Ok, back to the pedal.
So it's labeled the "EQ Exciter" but its actually neither///
Instead its a thick, hard clipping fuzz that sounds like a Shin Ei FY-2 being slammed by a Fuzz Face.
It has a slight upper octave, a really fat low end and gets all ring-moddy when you hit some higher notes.
The Fuzz tone on its own is pretty cool, BUT! the EQ knob is really where the magic lies.
So what is so great about it?
Well instead of it being just your typical Big Muff tone stack, or a lame old fashioned Lowpass filter
this seems to cut the Mid range at approximately 1000hz and then while turning the knob to the left it widens the Q until finally all of the High end and Mid range are cut out, leaving a rumbling bass bomb.
The result is being able to take a crushing buzzy fuzz with some nice mid range and turning into a devastating wall of death that sounds like a mix between a Muff and and an FY-2.
It's pretty responsive to guitar volume changes, and in fact the Gain knob is actually a Volume knob, so to get different ranges of fuzz you have to adjust the guitar volume. But rolling off the volume seems to soften it up a little bit and adds some dynamics, making it better for chords.
This thing really slays on bass. but can definitely do some cool lead tones for you wailing freaks.
ok, let's get down to it.
So under the hood you get three 2N 3565 trannies, which I'm assuming aren't anything special (yet! ).
and.... here's the pedal pornos:
