Park Porn

Post by Graham »

Well I'm pretty sure tha I already did various detailed posts of these but more than likely on the old site - possibly on a blue Hammerite Porn posting and linked onto other threads - I noticed that I was about to turn a "milestone" 500th post on this site (think I did bettern old one but not sure :hmm: ) So considering the possibility of it being a little topical thought I'd give us another looksee at some of my beloved blue fuzzsters.

I have been totally intrigued / absorbed by the whole Park story and have sent something like twenty five years (maybe more - says he in a decrepit white haired kind of way) tracking down nice old examples of the gear. I always thought that the white knobbed JTM45 Park heads from the mid to late 60's were the epitome of tonefulness but I also thought that the blue fuzzes were jusrt about "as good as it gets" - for all of my years playing there have always been two pedals that were invariably at my feet - one would be the Colorsound Wah Fuzz Swell in its various guises but the other would most definitely be the simple old blue Park FuzzSound - often with a proper OC44 Ragemaster in tow (thanks for finding me my current one all those years back Jason!) - A quick glance at my postings here (and particularly on the old site) ought to show that I am pretty sold out on my gear and apart from Dennis I can probably claim to have had the greatest exposure to the older fuzzy stuff - of our currently active membership. Despite having access to pedals that many can only dream about (bear in mind these things were no way so scarce back in the eighties - or costly!!) I really have to say that the venerable old blue pedals are simply the best - same as their amps - Jim Marshall really made sure that throughout the earliest days of the Park brand (As distinctly opposed to the recent reintroduction of the marque with their cheap far east range of kiddie amps) sounded at the very least as good as and in my opinion (and that of many more folks with better ears than me) noticeably better than the equivalent Marshal product. It is said that he deliberately sent his Park gear out in a "hotter" state of tune than the then American owned and controlled Marshall range. I certainly would not disagree!!

Anyway - I plan on adding a whole load of Park Porn here - pulling together what has been dotted about on a whole lot of other threads - and will kick it off with a few family groupings :

The one on the left has two copper jackets and one silver can - all the pots are date coded D 0 which I read as from the last quarter of 1970 probably pushing the manufactured date of the pedal itself into early 1971 - The other (right hand one) has three silver cans - unmarked as are those in the other pedal similarly the copper jackets (which I have always taken to be the same Germanium transistors just in a different protective casing) the pots in that one are date stamped 2 3 which I take to be from Feb 1973 although could be the other way round - i.e March '72 - I alway believed that where there is an alphanumeric code i.e D 0 or B 4 that the letter (which is almost always A,B,C or D) denotes the quarter of component manufacture as with mustard mullard caps (coincidentally!) and the number the last of the decade made - (so those 2 examples would be last quarter of 70 or 2nd quarter of 74) - I have seen the other purely numeric type of codes with numbers that appear to be the other way round (which is why I said that the second pedal might have been 72 or 73) or at least it has appeared so from other date coded components in the pedal - but a digression !! I might well be wrong but have spent a lot of time looking at a whole lot of components in both pedals and amps!! From what I have seen with a lot od these Sola type / made pedals, the components were not bought in huge batches and the codes are generally within 3 - 6 months of the pedal date---- What an anorak - Wasted Youth! (very wasted much of the time! )

Nice pic Graham! Do you still have those old Park heads? That would also make for some nice Park Porn.

There's a lot for a fuzz novice like me to learn on this forum. I'd never heard of Park pedals before!

Sure thing Tim - it would be good to put a decent dose of Park joy in the one place! David still has the 2 two knobbers but I have pics on file I think - I will need to hunt about for some suitable amp ones though as there are lots that I never stuck up here - all the 50's and the smaller twenty watters never minding the 75's and 100's... :chillin:

Some internal shots of the 3 knobbers:

Basically the same as the Sola mkIV - maybe a component or two with differing values and from the way that Jim Marshall always appears to have tried to put the Parks out in "hotter" state than regular Marshall components perhaps the trannies were selected out for gain / leakage a little more than was the norm in those days - although the Park fuzzes were not the same thing as the Marshall Supa Fuzzes - at least not from what my ears tell me! I understand that the supa fuzzes were gain limited to only put out the equivalent of around 90% of a regular Tonebender - the mk2 was what they copied or were based upon - (depending on whether you believe that Marshall made them theirselves or had them made by the Macaris) - I would say that the Parks were definitely manufactured by Solasound though and were more gainy - being effectively the same as the regular Sola Tonebenders (MkIV's & V's) but I have had a lot of the regular Sola fuzzes ad have to say that every Park I ever owned or had the chance to play through was simply outstanding - very similar in performance and as such somewhat more consistent than the Sola/Colorsound fuzzes - thats why I said what I did above about the possibility of having a better selection process for the trannies - otherwise I dont know how to explain the apparent uniformity of the Parks outstanding performance - Hopefully Dave or others will kick in on this point as it is important when looking at Park gear overall!
