This might be stating the obvious but you should invest in a breadboard and start the experimentation from there if you haven't already.

oh yeah man, i've got one but there are so many options out there I'm just looking to narrow down to a few that might be tried and true to find the ones (and gain ranges that i like)...!superslidetail wrote:This might be stating the obvious but you should invest in a breadboard and start the experimentation from there if you haven't already.
Also going to make one with sockets so I can easily test them as well...!

I got a large range of values in resistors and capacitors plus sockets as well. I have a Fuzz face built by Venus that is socketed on just about every component on the board. It's pretty damn cool for experimentation.

I really liked MP20A transistors. They are cheap, they have lots of volume without altering the 470 ohms resistor and they have low leakage overall

The only real circuit change I do is op the 470R resistor to 1K, this brings out the highs and bumps up the output a bit, like taking away a blanket covering your speaker.
The rest is down to transistor selection.
I have narrowed it down to a pretty select range of gains/leakage combo’s I like and then make sure I have plenty of those to pick through.
Then is just a matter of sticking them in the test box and trying all the combinations, some just have that little bit extra, even when electronically they’re the same.

I like the BC108 or the BC209 for a non-germanium. Jim built me a really nice BC209 that absolutely screams and has a nice feel to it. The BC108 versions I have tried have a sweet spot, sort of a one trick pony, but that trick is so damn good time stands still.

Quite possibly a clone of the BC209 Captains Choice Head Buzz...fantastic si FF1bottlerocket wrote:Jim built me a really nice BC209 that absolutely screams and has a nice feel to it.
