Nice score Cody! The 45 adapter looks pretty cool on there too.

Still a bit of a mystery though, no?

Gibson shipping figures suggest that around 5000 FZ1s were made, so the serial number is from the post Satisfaction 1965 production of FZ-1As, at leaat 1000 and maybe as much as 2000 into that serial number sequence. If the serial was 5500 I could understand them putting older FZ-1 guts in one of the new '65 enclosures. The guts look right, but maybe that's not the original enclosure?

He seemed very sure when I spoke to him over the phone the knobs were replacement and other than the cable/jack mod he'd done nothing to it. Said he was 61 and has had it for over 40 years. Played the hell out of it. Loved it.... and because of that he was firm on his price :tu:

Just goes to show we don't know as much as we thought about Fuzztones. The only hard facts are the shipping numbers, and that there were more than 5000.
Maybe they were under pressure to produce as many as possible to meet demand for 1As and there was a box of 2N270s lying around? Another scenario could be that they ran out of enclosures from the first run. I've heard of lots of anomalies with anachronistic features on Gibson gtrs, so it's not such a surprise.
Interesting that 5906 has the 2-battery holder also - are the resistor values adjusted at all to match the increased voltage?

According to my Gibson book the shipping numbers are 1962-5458, 1963-3,1964-0,1965-3454. 1966 I believe they moved to the black case.

On the EffectsDatabase page for the FZ-1's I keep a list of lowest and highest serial numbers I saw for each type:

http://www.effectsdatabase.com/model/ma ... z1#various

I just updated the highest SN for Kalamazoo-made FZ-1A's last week (about 1000 higher than before) and now also the lowest with Zuff-1A's info.

If anyone wants to share more data (also for other pedals), let me know, I can even make an interface to keep your lists.
