any love for the mxr distortion +?
dont really know much about this pedal other than that Ripley Johnson uses one and apparently it was the foundation from which the Pete Cornish SS3 was built from...

Big fan of that circuit family, limited as it may be: Distortion+/DOD 250/Ross Distortion

I like them well enough, although I don't currently have one. I've had 2 different ones over the years. They are built like tanks and I love the hard-wired AC power supply. For a rock and roll dirt sound you could do worse. That being said, you could do better for the same money these guys seem to get now. I'm much bigger fan of the Rat. You'll get more harmonics and bite, and that's what I tend to like in a distortion pedal.

I have a '76 script distortion+, and I like it with a tele or strat into a fender amp, especially with the distortion set about halfway. It's a nice, sweet sounding overdrive. When you turn up the distortion, it gets brighter, especially from 3 o'clock on up. It's not true bypass, though, and it does colour your tone a bit when it's off.
I got mine to get the sound from 0:39-2:32 in this video:

Ok. Fuck me. I thought we were discussing the MXR distortion II.
I would still agree with my original statement. I'd get an old brown Ross before I'd get an MXR.
Carry on while I sit in the corner and drink bongwater...

My favourite one is a block D+ ('78?) modded with switchable clipping LEDs and a bass boost. I had a Gray Channel which was ok but quite hifi and fuzzy. My d+ is an excellent OD/boost

The diode mod is nice for a bit of extra volume boost. With a single coil guitar it's not necessary. Compared mine original script logo with my bud's early block logo (which had been modded for the diode volume boost) and honestly they sounded nearly identical (minus the extra volume). These are great with humbuckers but a bit shrill with singles IMO...can get pretty bright but also nice a fuzzy when turned up. Ive heard that the ss-3 is based on one but to my ears anyways it's a totally different sounding pedal. The ss-3 is a marshall in a box, dist plus is way fuzzier and bright

Love the things! Early Iron Maiden and the Misfits, nuff said!
Doyle from the Misfits sold his original Distortion + on eBay many many moons ago and surely wins the prize for the most fucked up looking example. Heh.
