I'm looking for a not so expensive alternative for my crusty Roland Beebaa.

A pedal that doesn't take as much real estate as the original would be nice.
I don't need the treble boost circuit.
I need a lot of volume... way above unity gain...
Any recommendations?

Been considering trying a Maxon Fire or an Anarchy Audio Baa Bzz for ages but haven't gotten around to pulling the trigger...

And the possible reason for that is that I currently use an Analog Fox Tone Machine clone on my board and it has - way above unity gain, a similar gnarly fuzz character about it, and the octave up as a separate footswitch, it's a great board alternative for that type of fuzztone and doesn't leave me wanting a whole lot more! I love it with the Bass VI

^ You're right, John Lyons did a couple. My brother used to have a Black Cat version which (as I remember) was pretty good.

You can talk to Jimmy Behan (Super Electric Effects) who made a killer Beebaa pedal (I have one). He has shops on eBay and Reverb, and also is a forum member here.

I just bought a Black Cat Bee buzz. Curious to test it out.

I've just picked up a Maxon Fire too. It sounds awesome, very close to the original, slightly tighter low end and more focused, but the flavour is all there. The volume is also very similar though and isn't going to get you way over unity

I had a Stomp Under Foot Son of a Bee for a bit - wasn't for me, but it was well made and allegedly close to the real deal...
