Is the Gibson GA18 Explorer rarer?

Yep - working on my GA-45 was a PIA to work on - not sure if they are all like this but most of the resistors were mounted on the top side of the board and the caps on the underside. That with fairly sloppy wiring (original, I'm not sure) and the lacquered wire = time for sure! Worth every minute though.1bottlerocket wrote:I love the GA-40. I find it is a great 15 watt amp that has a great overdrive. I think the 5879 preamp tube has a lot to do with the nice saturation you can get when really pushing it. From what I understand they are hard to work on due to the way they are wired that is what a tech friend told me anyway. The tone is all there though.

I have a 1962 Ga-17 Scout. Great reverb and trem. 6aq5 tubes give it about 12 watts. Very clean for the wattage. Even a Paul hardly breaks it up. Nice amp and some different.

Re: Vintage Gibson amp
Finally got amp I searced for years
Gibson GA 75 1951
Was cheap and totally beat up, but after speaker (15") recone and usual cap/chord/resistor job sounds amazing! From beautiful clean to moderate rock'n'roll. Especially great with slight analog delay, just fills room with sound

Re: Vintage Gibson amp
Gibson amps are great! They have their own sound. A different sounding break up crunch sound than fenders. They also look very cool. They used top quality parts. Had to compete with Fender at the time. Not sure why they are so under the radar. The GA-18 explorer is an amazing amp. the old leatherette early 50s GA-20s are also amazing. The late 40's -50's GA20s and GA30s have a sound all their own. Fender amps got all the attention while Gibson amps went unnoticed. People now are catching on. The prices are super reasonable as well. 1-2000 grand gets you stellar classic tones. No need for pedal. My '49 black GA-30 has amazing break up when pushed. You can't go wrong with these amps.
