Vintage Gibson amp

Post by Zuff-1A »

Please advise me about vintage Gibson amp's
Looking for great vintage live amp for regular use: nice fat semi-clean
at lower volumes and usable dirty crunch at higher settings (or just amp maxed and
all tones with guitar volume/tone)
Never played with Gibson amp's but models what I liked youtube are
GA 75, GA 77; GA Ranger 20T; GA Invader and maybe GA 50 (but it seems quite clean even maxed)

Thanks if you share your experiences

Best tone in my opinion (same amp sold for bit over $500  :

I think Jim and dev have posted about old Gibson amps before. The clips I've heard sound great and it seems like they're still a little "underground" and really good value compared to Fenders, etc from the same periods. Really interested to see where this ends up

I love em. Have a GA5 and a GA20. They're usually way cheaper than old Fenders too.
GA-40 is a good call.
Dear Bongo, No.

Had a Maestro GA-45 for years (4x8 GA-40 cousin) - amazing break-up and dimed sound. Unapologetic dirty blues amp all around and one of the great harp amps. Took pedals well especially considering the headroom. Not a ton of volume. Could be an issue depending on how loud your band is unless mic'd but if you can make it work and just use you guitars volume it's a beast!
Vintage Gibsons and Ampegs are GREAT amps that you can still get reasonable, especially if you work on them yourself. Good luck!

I love the GA-40. I find it is a great 15 watt amp that has a great overdrive. I think the 5879 preamp tube has a lot to do with the nice saturation you can get when really pushing it. From what I understand they are hard to work on due to the way they are wired that is what a tech friend told me anyway. The tone is all there though.

I have a 60s gibson scout amp that I just love. Perfect pedal platform amp and the reverb kills! They don't sound exactly like the comparable fender equivalent but most gibson amps I've tried have been great and way more reasonably priced than a similar fender

Prices for GA 20 are between $900-$1400
I like how older Gibson amps break up - rad and sweet same time!
