Re: Tele Talk
Ever thought about going the partscaster route? Mjt does ebay listings all the time and you can usually get a pretty good deal. Then you have your pick of hardware and pickups. Just a thought. For the price of a custom shop fender you could make like 10 awesome partscasters!

Re: Tele Talk
I'd look into the Japanese made Fenders as well. I've played some that were easily on par with the Custom Shop offerings, but at prices that are half of those in your first first post. Drop in a pair of your favorite pickups and that's it.
Condolences, the bums lost!

I like a rosewood fret board and I do like the binding on those customs but you never really know about a guitar until you pick it up and play it, so I think you're going about it the right way by playing as many as you can. You're not in a hurry and you've got plenty of options so just let the process take as long as it takes.

Re: Tele Talk
That 64 looks good. I'm a Tele guy; this is the stuff I look for:
1. Around 7 lbs.
2. Chunky neck
3. 21 frets
4. Low E needs to give a metallic snap when plucked, open and on the first couple frets. If a Tele does this, it'll sound good all over.
5. I don't like a body made from more than two, maybe 3, pieces of wood. This is totally a personal idiosyncracy I can't shake.

Oh, and if you don't mind the Custom Shop snobbery, the 2000-2010 Nocasters are pretty much the last word in Telecasters. They're crazy consistent, and usually better than real Blackguards.
