Closed or open back cab?

Post by bluemoon »

With a Mesa Mark V. It would need to be 1x12 and used a home. I don't play much/any high gain stuff. I've always used open back cabs...thinking I might need a closed back with the mesa. Thoughts?

the advantage of a closed back Cab is that it throws the sound further in a room
and you get tighter bottom end.
open back you get more sound were you are :headbanger:

I have been using a 1x12 closed back Marshall cabinet from the 70s for a long time now and it sounds great with almost every amp I have. It is large enough to accommodate two 12" drivers but with the one it has a huge sound. I really dig closed back cabs.

Went with closed. I have an open back cab, so I figured I would change it up a little. The closed back cab I bought is front ported. Not sure if that makes a big difference or not.

The front port really focuses the bass response quite well.

I usually love the sound of a closed back cab, and I always associate mesas with that tight low end.
I'd go with closed unless you have a specific reason for wanting to open it up. And then I'd try it with the back off ... if you like it, cut a big fucking hole in the back panel.

On stages with no or no good monitoring system always open back to get a good impression of your own tone.

I go zilla cabs which has 3 panel. If I'm playing blues - eminence and open. If I'm going classic rock - greenback and closed.
With high gain I'd go closed too!

I'm a closed guy, simply because ive never had the chance to try any open back cabs that are not a combo.
