What speakers Deluxe 65 Reverb

Post by Doc Holliday »

Have the option of picking up a 65 Reverb reissue head.
I'd have to sell my supro probably if I liked it.
Plus I'd get a cab made. Just wondered what people were using?
I love American guitars and amps but have always preferred British speakers. I just find they work better with all types of drive pedals. The American types I've had were cool for clean but unless I used a tubescreamer type pedal the flat EQ Overdrives sounded abit sterile to my ears!
Do British speakers and American work well together?

I've heard the :

EMI GB 128
EMI GA SC64
WGS ET 65
Celestion Gold
Celestion vintage 30
Celestion V type

Are all different variations of tone but strong contenders.

I know the cannabis rex gets recommended for use in the combo DR. I have one in my YGM3 and it is a big-sounding and efficient driver with a thick low-end that doesn't get muddy.

I've got nothing to compare it to but I really love my Deluxe Reverb with the Celestion Alnico Cream speaker - I had the reissue amp gutted and equipped with a hand wired thing. Really good amp on it's own and with pedals.

I've heard a Celestion Vntage 30 in a DR and it sounded just fine. It was being played at a regular playing volume and it still sounded like a DR.

There are a few Dealer Exclusives here in the States that offer an Alnico Blue in the DRRI. I've heard that Celestion under-rates their speakers, but for me that's a little too close for comfort. I'd probably go with the Alnico Gold. :tu:

If you want something as close to the original as possible I'd recommend a weber. They have will have a model that replicates what originally came with a deluxe in the 60s.

You know, I don't know if I would want anything spot on. I'm not really a big clean guitar guy but I think Gibsons through fender amps sound very cool. Peter green being one of my faves. I think I'd just want a speaker which accepts pedals well without compleatly turning it into a different amp.

That's how I'd describe the CRex. I went from a jensen P12Q (nice tone but a bit wimpy) to the CR and it was like the same amp but with extra oomf on tap for when you need it.

Try out a Celestion A-Type 12'' 50W 8 Ohm. Those are affordable and they rock in a Deluxe reverb - vintage or reissue.
