Analog Delays...what do you like?

Post by Zacharia Matilda »

I've used a tape echo of some sort pretty much exclusively and want to dip my toe into BBD-land. I'm not interested in tap tempo. I mainly use it as I used to use reverb...short delays to give the sound some dimension. What do you guys like? Carbon Copy? Ad80? EHX? Something else?

Howdy. Like you, tape is usually my bag, but not wanting to haul it around any more led me to try a bunch of different pedals. Clear winner for me was the Fairfield Meet Maude. It has variable modulation and switchable compressor on board so you can get into tape land pretty easily. There is a lot of fun in that box, especially for short delays. It can get in this mode with infinite repeats/controlled feedback that is very trippy. I liked the Caitlinbread products as well, but only kept the meet maude.

Lots of Eighties off-brand analog delays with lots of character.

Pretty much use delay the same way, Zac (i.e., very sparingly if at all), but I really like the AD 4096 from Endangered Audio Research. Forget the Mk 2 and try to pick up one of the original versions.

I’ve never found anything that can match the big box DMM, good reason why it’s such an iconic thing.

To add another one into the mix, I've heard nothing but great things about the Ibanez Analog Mini Delay, which you can pick up for well under a hundred bucks.
