I'll give it a whirl with my jerms FZ-1A - that never disappoints. I think it's only three notes - something like G to F# to G and maybe up to A#. Starting out with a thin tone to begin with is probably the key.Gemma Thrush wrote: ↑Fri Apr 20, 2018 10:20 am
No sustain at all, right? so I figured Maestro, rather than Fuzzrite.
You think an FZ-1 rather than an FZ-1A?
I've bought a few FZ-1As hoping they take me there but they always disappoint.
What pedal makes this fuzz sound?

For sure an FZ1 or 1A would get that Spiderman fuzz sound.
Not far off on this at the start for example.

Along with about 100,000,000 Pebbles lps, that demo is to blame for me spending loads of money on FZ1As that didn't sound remotely as cool as this...

We've talked about this before (somewhere on the board), but you have to change the way you play when you're using an FZ-1 - you really have to dig your fingers into the fretboard as well as ramp up your pick attack. It's almost like you have to fight against the fuzz to get the best sounds out of it.Gemma Thrush wrote: ↑Fri Apr 20, 2018 1:32 pm Along with about 100,000,000 Pebbles lps, that demo is to blame for me spending loads of money on FZ1As that didn't sound remotely as cool as this...
Two other buzzy 60s fuzz boxes I love that will get you close but are also a little more flexible and easier to get great sounds out of (maybe because they're both silicon fuzzes): the Fuzzstainer and the Regulus VIII (Os Mutantes fuzz). Creepy Fingers and Basic Audio (the Fuzz Mutant) both make killer versions of the Os Mutantes.

Yep, I reckon the Spidey fuzz is an FZ-1. Here's a quick recording straight into an iPod: Greco Les Paul > jerms FZ-1 > VibroChamp. Bridge pickup, a tiny bit of tremolo from the amp (because buzzy fuzz and trem go hand in hand), attack on the fuzz set around 3, so plenty of room to go:

That combo sounds great, nice fat FZ-1 tone!HorseyBoy wrote: ↑Sat Apr 21, 2018 9:06 am Yep, I reckon the Spidey fuzz is an FZ-1. ^ Thanks, fellas! Tried it with some single coils (a Jazzmaster) as well but it was closer with the humbucker.
