Identify the fuzz

Post by Yggdrazil »

Hey guys, I need your help.

A customer is asking me the following question:
What is your best box for fuzzy but tight driven distortion? Looking for an old timer tone like The Music Machines Eagle Never Hunts The Fly.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jrPze7Ba7g

What these guys were using?
I would say a Mosrite Fuzzrite or a Maestro Fuzz Tone maybe...
Sure thing ''fuzzy but tight driven distortion'' doesn't match in my book :oldlol:

This is one of the great mysteries of the fuzz world. The Music Machine used their own custom fuzz box, built by the band's bass player, Keith Olsen, who went on to be a big time (and I mean big time) engineer and producer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Olsen
So you might get close with a Fuzzrite or maybe a NuFuzz, but it won't be the same.

Yup, I though about the Nu Fuzz as well as a possibility.

Thx for putting me on the right trail Horsey :tu:
Most probably it's a modified Maestro Tone.

I just found this:
http://earfuzzeffects.blogspot.com/?_sm ... 2kS41NP0SM
"With The Music Machine, the bands vision was to record & play looking & sounding like no one who'd come before. Our own look & our own sound!!.. Sean Bonniwell (lead singer/ songwriter/ bandleader), Keith Olsen (bass), Ron Edgar (drums), Doug Rhodes (keyboards), & myself all agreed...
Keith was already an engineer, & set about designing & building our own fuzzbox for our own sound... We also tuned way down to D or Db for a more gutteral overall sound... After The Music Machine, I switched to a "Fuzzface"

Mark Landon, Lead guitar, The Music Machine

...and.. If you click on
http://www.bonniwellmusicmachine.com/blog/index.php
and view the MM video of "Talk Talk" (and others under 'Vintage Videos), you'll see the guitars we used (other than Guild).

Please free to contact us anytime, the garage is always open..

In God we trust,

I can get that Music Machine fuzz tone with my jerms Mk Ultra (early Mk1 circuit with switchable output caps for Maestro style buzziness)

I definitely think that a hot-rodded Maestro FZ-1 circuit is the way to go.
