^ The only other guy I can think of who wrote with a similar force (and who admired Hemingway and was admired by Hemingway in return) was Nelson Algren. Love his stuff. "The Man with the Golden Arm" is probably his best-known book (and it's fucking amazing) but I really like "Somebody in Boots", which he kinda re-wrote later on as "A Walk on the Wild Side" (and Lou Reed made famous in song). This is also really cool:

Atlas Shrugged. Didn't want to pay over $25 and downloaded one from Amazon, but apparently couldn't open it on my reader and had to download MOBI to EPUB converter. So, it was a long way but I'm happy that I finally made it because the book is really great.

Just finished "The Brotherhood of the Grape" (thanks for the heads-up, Captain!) and really enjoyed it. For some reason it reminded me of Don Carpenter, one of my favourite writers, so I started reading "Hard Rain Falling", his first book, again. Fucking great stuff.

Some good info on it here:

And the Pelecanos intro is here:

Carpenter wrote a lot of screenplays, too, including "Payday", where Rip Torn plays an updated version of Hank Williams. One of the best "musician on the road" movies I've ever seen.

I'm reading Les Gommes by Alain Robbe-Grillet. He's another who did a lot of film work as well as novels.

Waking up, Sam Harris.

An excellent read if you are interested in secular spirituality.
