I had one worse than that, an Epiphone Les Paul that had a dead bridge pickup. Take the pots out and it works, put them back into the guitar and it stops working. No, the shape of the cavity at one of the pots was bending the fucking pot out of shape when the nut was tightened, causing the wiper to lift off!!
All fixed by a nice hefty washer.
