MKII Shootout / Guessing Game

Post by fuzz-tone »

Hi all - I've recorded an mp3 of the three different MKIIs I have. Basically just running through the basic sounds: an open E string, a single string lead-type riff, and then a couple Yardbirds riffs. Each pedal had the "attack" setting where each pedal sounds best, and they all ended up being at roughly 12 o'clock.

They are recorded in this order the whole time: Clean guitar - MKII #1 - MKII #2 - MKII #3

The recording setup was a Fender Esquire into a 1959 Supro 1624T Dual Tone, mic'd with an SM57. No effects were used. I did it in one shot, and left the flubs on there. I'm not trying to win any prizes for playing, just trying to get across the tone of each pedal with the same riff (or close, anyway).

I'm interested to hear opinions on which one sounds best, and what manufacturers you think each one are. I don't want name-brands to get in the way of your ears. One last thing, they are all current production pedals you can buy today.

I like #2 the best on the first couple clips and I like #1 for the Think about it riff. #3 seems like it lacked a whole bunch of character compared to the other 2.

It's probably unfair to judge #3 against the other two with the same attack settings. Here's the same clip, but with new clips for #3 with the "attack" full up. This way it's comparing apples to apples

#3 sounds better with the attack up the 2nd time around, but to me it has to much gain for my taste compared to the others, I like #2 the best. I dont have a clue as far as what make these pedals are but its a great comparison none the less thanks! :tu:

1 has the best balance of sound.
2 could be really good for recording.
3 has the most clarity and punch for live use.

Can't say I had a favorite ... well maybe #1 if I had to choose,
but pedals alone without a band aren't always indicative of what's "best."

I actually like the Esquire/Supro tone the best!
