Silvertone Twin Twelve

Post by psycho*daisies »

There's one at the local shop...circa 1964,
...cosmetically looks about NM to me.
it has thee sickest reverb on channel 2. I LOVE it!!
some people probably hate these reverbs, but to me it's
genius. anything above 3 or 4 and sounds like
you're grappling with a varmint in a dark cave...
...cavernous and slightly beyond control!
...and it starts squealing & feeding back kinda.
VERY Velvet Underground...I plugged in a '61 SG R/I and
I WAS Sterling Morrison. :fu: (i want that guitar too!!)
If you palm mute the strings with that gargantuan reverberation going,
there begins a kind of sympathetic resonance drone in the tank,
a 3-D effect, unreal....sounds like someone else is playing a drone.
Sounds a-la We Will Fall on Stooges first LP or VU's Venus In Furs...

the tremolo is OK, kinda weak, but works pretty well.
It has almost all (if not all) original Silvertone tubes,
the only bummer is the original Jensen C12's were switched
out with Electro-Voice "Michigan" MC-12's (near the bottom of EV line,
similar to Wolverines...) Probably c. 70 when that was done...(guessing)
and one of them has a few tears in the speaker, so they'd need to be reconed.
DAMN, i want this thing. It's the ultimate coffee bar amp...
35 watts. breaks up nicely...aaagh. what to do?

It's marked $625, but the seller is some kid who works there, and he had it listed
on local Craigs List for $500.

hmmmm... :freak:

I have the Silvertone 6x10. The reverb and tremolo are notorious for not working or being very weak, so to get one that works is really cool. The crunch of these amps is what does it for me. That, and the fact that Jack White has two of the very same model. :badteeth:

One of my favorite amps in the world

my old one has been on a few major label albums - easily holds its own with the "high end" amps

I gave one to my old guitarist for his birthday

just killer freakin tone.

Yeah, I've known a few guys that used these over the years and they're really nice... if it wasn't for the speakers it'd be a no brainer. I guess the questions to ask are can you live with the current speakers, if not can you live with them until you replace them? And the most basic question, is it worth it to you? If you need them I've got a couple Celestions you could borrow, G12M & G12H, until you find something you like for it.

thanks guys,
Even with the slightly torn speaker, it sounds damn good. I mean these things
are pretty lo-fi. wild n fuzzy...i honestly couldn't tell it was torn when played...

Does anybody have a Vintage Guitar Buyers Guide, 2008? How much do the 1484's book for? (Exc)
(piggyback)...Thanks in advance.

I dunno, If i do grab it, i might just re-cone & keep those EV's....they sound good for what I'd use it for.
(mood-music-coffeehouse gigs with a drummer)
...Celestions would be the bomb, though. Kevin, you should stop by the shop (J's) and check it out
if you're in the neighborhood. Also that 60's SG Reissue is damn sweet. (they want $1250 for it
--is that about right?)

Ha, Trevor! 6x10 cab?!! that's awesome...120 watts/4 6L6's on those? haha.
((((Super Gorilla!)))
...heehee
amazing, you could buy these from fuckin' Sears in the 60's!

If you think the 6x10 part is crazy, try thinking of the sound when I put the Uni-Drive in front of it. It's killer. :shocked2:

I think you should jump on it Dave. :tu:
