1964 Gibson SG Junior restoration

Post by Jim Goad »

Finally getting my shit together and fixing up my favourite guitar. Needs a fret dress and one corner of the fretboard re-glueing so I thought I’d take the time to refinish, replace the nut and re-position one of the bridge posts. Looks like it was converted to a leftie at one point.

Another great project, Jim! Shame the original finish is long gone, but Juniors were always players' guitars and those pre-65 Gibson/Epiphone necks are my absolute favourites.

Nice! I've got a 63 (les paul) junior. Wicked guitars!
Great deals with: Stu, Graham, Sickle, Devnulljp, SteveG, peps1, paine, fuzzface6669, jetofuj, sciencefriction, jerms, rafmax, Bigfoot2000, whiskeyfuneral, monolithfuzz.

63 to early 65 is my favourite era for SGs. Nice wide nut and chunky neck profile without being too fat.

Hey Jim,
Are you going to leave the headstock like it is, or get a new veneer and logo? Looks cool either way.

Going to spray black, add a gold logo and clear coat nitro over the top. The body and neck will be Pelham blue with lightly tinted clear coat to get that green hue.

Not much wrong with the neck join on a junior but specials can be pretty wobbly.

New side dots in. The old ones had been replaced with little rosewood dowels. I’m 90% sure this was converted to a lefty in the past. Why else would anyone move the bridge post and fill the side dots?
