Missed this when it came out in April but finally got my hands on a copy: James Brown's "Sho is Funky Down Here", which is pretty much a companion album to the excellent "Grodeck Whipperjenny" album released under the name of Brown's arranger, David Matthews.
I just listened to this one earlier; really excellent!!!

Q: Which Tone Bender model do you reckon was used here? (wait for it — the end is full-tilt fuzz meltdown)

Sounds great, whatever it is. If I had to guess, I might say a Mk II with a single coil bridge pickup. But it might not be a Bender at all. Didn't this project mutate into the Pink Fairies, who famously used a WEM Project V fuzz?

You may very well be right — I was just hazarding a guess — but it sounds like a Tone Bender to me — The first thing I thought of when I heard it the other day, and it’s I heard it along time ago but it’s been a while, was the D*A*M big blue box Fuzz Sound, so I guess I was thinking Mk IV, because even though it’s being played with wild abandon, the tone still seems rather compressed, balanced & smooth with that signature mid range quack. I agree with you on the Stratocaster with whammy bar — Good call! PS: I keep forgetting if I asked you, did the hotel deliver that T-shirt to you before you left town?

Right on
John Maher: What a great drummer! Like all my favorite drummers he knows exactly how to push the tempo ever so slightly, *leading the band* like a train barreling down the tracks through the night
