Update!!Klon KTR vs Gold Klon Centaur vs Silver Klon Centaur

Post by emanux »

Ok, shootout! :badteeth:

Now with loopers to avoid buffers effect in chain:

Green+blue led=pedal on the right active
Red+Red led=pedal on the left active
Green+Red led=directly clean amp

since klons have a buffer on when bypassed, this would affect the next one or two in line. to make a true comparison, each one should be heard without any other klons in line. i think this is why the silver one sounds bassier?
thank you for making the demo, sounds good!

It's funny, because I've tried every position and, in my rig, nothing changes... I've tried with a looper too. Only the KTR, if I switch to tbp, sounds different... I will retry! :)
Anyway, the differences are really really little to my ears.

Thank you. I definitely appreciate your efforts, but, please, play louder when you try again. :badlove:

I found, at least while testing Jim's sliver klon vs the KTR...that this is really one of those pedals that's almost impossible to hear differences when recorded. The klon, as much as hype as it gets, is pretty great for a variety of applications, but as a clean boost, as Ema has it here in the beginning, it's almost imperceptible in what it really does: sort of like a pedal compressor in that way that the pedal has to be more "felt" than heard. I know that may sound ridiculous but it really does a great job of adding definition and punch in a loud band setting. I was using mine the other night at a gig with my '62 silvertone stratotone, which doesn't have the highest of output pickups, and the klon really brought it to life. Unfortunately I think it really hard and/or impossible to hear such differences between units on a youtube recording. Just my two cents. And yes, the KTR does sound nearly or exactly the same as the original, but is unfortunately far less roadworthy, which IMO is a real bummer...plus it looks like shit.

ditto on the durability factor.
anyone who has serviced road worn or barroom worn gear knows where the weak links are. the KTR has 'em, the silver and gold versions did not.

regarding the tone., , i totally get your points red. some gear just adds some oomph that makes the perceived sound just 'better' i know this exists.

I understand your concerns, guys, but by the same token, if something goes wrong with a Centaur, it needs the entire board replaced.
