Do I need a Fuzz Face or Vox TB?
Hey,
Trying to talk myself out of getting a Vox Tone Bender or a Ge Fuzz Face and I suspect I'm not going to get much discouragement posting here I'm looking at Super Electric Effects as that reflects my tight arse budget these days - plus I really like his work (have a Dizzy Tone, Ge Fuzzrite and MKIII)
Having never heard either a Vox TB or FF up close I'm looking around at what I currently have and scratching my head. Going by the internet and folks who know infinitely more than I, the obvious picks from my current selection would be a D*A*M / Sola MK1.5 and a Drag'n'Fly. So basically, am I covered? If I picked up a Ge FF or Vox TB would I essentially be getting more of the same?
Here's some pics of the D'n'F to treat the eyes. 2009!? Where has time gone... I can grab some pics of the Goldie (#23) if anyone wants.
Cheers
Gary

My 1.5 makes for a pretty convincing fuzz face to my ears.
Without the woollyness.
The earlier Vox Tonebenders sound more fuzz face like to me also. I’ve had 2 of Stus in past.
The later Vox TB pedals sound thinner, raspy and pretty different.
Depends what sound your looking for.

The cover of X In Search of Space is possibly a clue.

The classic VOX TB is probably more versatile. Responds nicely if you turn guitar vol/tone knobs.
Tones from fuzz to overdive to slight clean boost.

Ahh maybe. Is there much fuzz on this album?

Stu Castledine made a three knob germ Fuzz Face with fixed attack using one knob for bias and anther for filter. Can do a fat Fuzz Face to Vox '66
Love that Stingray

Ah here. That Stingray sounds great. I tend to play around with Dave Brock and Ron Asheton riffs when bending my ear to fuzz so anything that gets me closer to that makes me a happy chappy.
No 100% sure what fuzz Brock used for the "classic" period but I'm fairly sure they we given a few Solasound boxes going by the recent ad someone posted (D.Main I think). Ron used a Vox TB going by a a few photos.

Asheton brought me to the Vox and love it, the FF gets a bit too wooly for me, but I think I just haven't found the right one yet... Loved the Sola 1.5 and the DAM Dragonfly too but last year I discovered my perfect 2 transistor is the Super Bee! Bloody love that thing!
Though Gary, I don't think you'd necessarily be getting more of the same, especially if you're as nit picky as I am! But it's in the same ballpark for sure. And of course depends a lot on the other gear you're using it with, how you play etc etc...

I got Vox off Jimmy Behan years ago that was tuned for a smoother sound, solves what I don’t like about the FF. I’m assuming he makes a 1.5 now in that ballpark.
