A little Hurst/Colorsound porn

Post by Sauniere »

I believe it's early 70s and designed by Mr. Hurst. One of the 800mH inductor circuits only done for a few years I believe. "Restored" by Proanalog. Some :hmm: 's in there like all of that bare wire from the pot and the plugged holes. The new footswitch and switch wiring were done later when the bypass went a little foggy. Sounds awesome though despite all of my minor niggles. Posted this at the Gear Page, so I thought I might as well throw it up here as well.

Lol. That was my reaction when I pulled the monster from the box! Not very much treadle action either. Has a narrow range both tonally and physically. Sounds nice and mellow though and of course it's cool as hell looking. I should get a picture of it's guts up as well. Stu restored that one and did a much nicer resto job than Proanalog did on my Colorsound.

Coolio. I don't think Mr. Hurst had any play in the Colorsound wah though. He was long gone by that time.

Pretty much agreed there - as for the MArshall wah - I did an "exposee" on mine either here or on the old forum - lots of close ups and some comparisons with other wahs - its a proper old toe breaker though - up there with the big DeArmond Weeper Wahs and the huge EH jobbies - I'd agree too that they are a little disappointing in use! Though cool as hell alongside a supa fuzz or two (in thieir matching livery) and a nice Marshall rig!

There was a similar Colorsound that went for sale on Ebay a couple of years back. The seller claimed one of the Macaris told him the wah was designed by Hurst and only produced for a couple years in the early 70s. Scotty had told me it was produced in the late 60s, but Stu provided some pics of '68-70 Colorsounds in the old archive and they used the clover inductor. :hmm: http://dam.10.forumer.com/viewtopic.php ... ght=scotty

Was Dick Denney with Colorsound in the eatly 70s? Maybe the Macaris got Denney confused with Hurst as far as the pedal's design.

Dick Denney designed there inductor-less wah which they still use today. I think that surfaced in the late 70's early 80's. He also designed a lot of their circuits in the 90's reissues including a weird circuit they used in the MKII's for a time.

A little of topic but still on the Denney path. The one knob "Fuzz Box", the original two transistor circuit made on strip board was a Denney design too. Its said he designed this in 1961! As Analogguru has so wisely pointed out this type of circuit is really similar to the input section of the Vox T60. I guess a Denney creation too!?! Again I think AG touched on this point also, but could Denney have been the missing link? The reason for the MKI.5? The MKI.5 is related to the one knob Fuzz Box. Man, I'm on one today :hihi:

I thought that was a 90's design, that is what I was lead to believe when I posted my Analogman rehouse of the one knob fuzz. The model I have is a two transistor circuit hand-wired on a strip board. :hmm:
