Spirit In The Sky Fuzz
Anyone know what Norm Greenbaum was using? I have heard it was a modded Fuzz Face.
Any ideas on the best way to re-create that sound?
Thanks

Well this is a good one.
For some time it was supposed to be a Jordon Bosstone plug-n-play pedal. Then there was a real intersting post on TGP from a guy claiming he was involved with the recording of that track.
He mentioned that there was something built into Norman's tele that was used on the track but did not say what it was..........just a fuzz box. People asked him if he would make more and he was considering it.
The Bosstone gets real close to that sound and they are being remade by Mahoney Music in Nashville.
Chris is a great guy so you will not have any trouble.
I hope this helps

I spoke with the man himself about this, he said his tech wired a circuit into the guitar. He implied it was a circuit of his tech's design.

That a pretty unique fuzz tone, IMO. I wonder if it is a unconventional circuit?

I thought that part was played by session man Mike Deasey, so Norman played it?

I think "Spirit In The Sky" was the first Fuzz I ever heard. When I was a little kid I had no idea what was making that awesome sound but I loved it. I wish Norm would let some one clone his fuzz.

Nope I think it's definitely a fuzz pedal.
The torn speaker story is from Link Wray, "Jack The Ripper" from about ten years earlier.

Also a torn speaker sound on "Train Kept a Rollin" by Johnny Burnette. If you haven't heard that version find it and be amazed. I actually found an even older version from the 40's. Most people know it from the Yardbirds or Aerosmith, but I like the older Johnny Burnette version much better.
