I agree with Brad - thicker isn't necessarily heavier. Some players like SRV got fat tones with big strings, but he played much cleaner than guys like Iommi. I like a thicker string as it provides stability and tension at lower tunings, but I wouldn't go any fatter than 13s. I know Mastodon tune to c and lower, and they use 10s, I guess they don't feel the need for more tension.

I actually don't even think that drop tunings necessarily ensure heavier tones. The mid-period Melvins stuff was drop D, as was early Soundgarden. Stuff like Pentagram is in regular tuning I think. I reckon if my band had a bass player I'd tune up, we go low to fill that space.

Ernie Ball Strings go up to a .60 if you buy them individually. Any good music shop should stock them & let you make up your own set.

They've got GHS Boomers & loads of other stuff. Cheap, quick delivery & I've never had any problems with them
