There is in fact already a historical precedent for the 'hybrid MKI'. The youngest (known) of the Zonk Machines were built with silicon transistors in the second position. I've played two hybrid Zonks and they both sounded ace, but I suspect that this probably doesn't completely solve the awkwardness of building MKI's?

That would be sweet, a cheap(er) hybrid Zonk

They already have the perfect blue hammertone done up for the Fuzz Sound / Hybrid MKII. >>

Re: Sola Sound Tonebender MKIV "The yellow zeppelin"
Got a Yellow Zeppelin from Reverb that sounds like there's something wrong with it. Is there any YZ owners here who can describe the tone?
I think mine needs a repair, seems something is wrong compared to others. Mine struggles to reach volume parity. It is extremely woolly with no real clarity or mids and it's sustain on anything less than full bore is not really there. It doesn't clean up really at all. The best way I can describe it is it sounds sorta dead, like it's struggling to be alive (not in a dead battery sort of way, it's all fresh carbon zinc batts). With fuzz and volume all the way up you can get some really bassy balls to the wall fuzz, but that's all it can really do.. anything down from there and the life just leaves it. Certainly not the powerhouse I'm used to.
The biggest indicator to me though is, I have about 12 Sola Sound / DAM pedals, and every single one has been the best fuzz pedal of it's type I've played, until this one - this one just sounds bad. That's not right.
I sent the captain an e-mail inquiring into repair, so hopefully I hear something back one day.. but curious what others experiences with the Yellow Zeppelin is? What is it supposed to sound like in it's original nature?

Have you looked at the circuit to see if there are any signs of damage? Have you reported the issue to the Reverb seller? I'm sure you paid a pretty penny for it and if it's not in the advertised condition, you may have some recourse with Reverb. I hope Dave can fix it easily for you.
