EHX Bad Stone pining for the fjords!

Post by devnulljp »

I just got a zombie face Bad Stone off ebay...and it's £%$%*ing dead. Not undead, just dead in the water. It is an ex-phaser.
The seller has shut up shop/closed their ebay account (or been booted off, who knows?).
Anyone got a guts pic of one of these so I can trace the wires?
Seriously bummed.

This pedal is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-PEDAL!!

I have one though I had to rebuild it to get it working. If you find schematics on the web, be sure it is the correct version for this, as the second version is different. I will try to dig mine up to see if it is good to pic for you. All the ICs on mine have the labels sanded off.

So, that's just a bog standard electrolytic cap right? How can I tell if it's polarised or not?

Or use an electrlytic non-polarized capacitor to replace it.

That may be A problem but not THE problem.
If you put a battery in you may be able to measure the voltages at both sides of the
caps pads. The side with the highest voltage goes to the + of the new cap.
If that's the problem then you are lucky!!

Here's the schematic of the pedal version of the bad stone, which I belive is the same as the mummy face version, both being pre-feedback control. The only two 10uF electros I see are for power filtering and probably wouldn't keep the pedal from working if removed.

Ach, bummer. I was hoping that was it. I'm going to send this off for repair to someone that knows what they're doing.

Sadly I am thinking it might be a reverse power blowup. The caps would go and most of the ICs (those are pretty common ones so it is not hell to fix that either).

I don't think so. These run off a pair of 9 volts only, no power supply unless it's been modified, in which case you'd need two power supplies or a bi-polar supply, which also seems like an unlikely mod.
