I believe the 1966 has a 2-Transistor Circuit, whereas the MKII has a 3-Transistor circuit. The 1966 is based on the italian Tone Bender.

It's a touch confusing as both pedals have the word "tone bender" in their name. The 1966 is a Vox tonebender. Two transistors, small output cap=buzzy! fizzy! bright and brash. The professional MK II is a three transistor circuit=smoother! more compression, gain! low end! Two totally different animals really.

Then the '66 has the Super Bee mode That gives it some considerable beefiness.
Great for hitting it with a treble boost or wah

Do you like to clean up your fuzz with your guitar volume knob? You will like the 1966! Don't care about cleanup and just want balls out fuzz? You will like the MK II!

When I hit London later in the year I think I might have a crack at a Mk1.5..
How do they sit in the mix?

Speaking for my 1.5 It's closer to a MkII than the Vox/'66. Like redeye said the Vox is a different animal. The 1.5's A bit brighter than the MkII in the upper mids. Raunchier? My 1.5 also cleans up better than anything I own. Just a beautifully rich dirty clean.
