Trip to Japan - Looking for Superfuzz! Any Suggestions?

Post by king_of_the_road »

Hey guys, long time no see! I hope you're all doing well!!

I'm on a mission! I'll be traveling to Japan next week for almost 3 weeks, visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and a couple other places. It's my first time over there and I really want to get my hands on a Univox Superfuzz. I just can't find them over here in Europe. Can you recommend me any shops especially in those aforementioned bigger cities where I could get lucky? I also wouldn't mind any weird vintage Japanese Muff copies either, but the Superfuzz is where it's at for me at the moment.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Bunch of places in Ochanomizu in Tokyo.
There used to be a great little store in western Kyoto, down near Nighioji-Oike, close to Nijojo, can't remember the name. They built and sold the Sobbat pedals. Guy who ran the place was a total vintage guitar nut.
Kinko Music I think. Haven't been there in 20 years though, so who knows?

Some crazy gear in Tokyo -- I went into one place in the 90s that had a wall of 50s Vs and Explorers, not to mention the Les Pauls.
Once place let me play an early 20th Century Herman Hauser classical worth $250,000. Guy just handed it to me and walked away.
Nuts

I am in Japan right now. Old Japanese fuzz boxes are getting harder to find. But at least you can buy a Klon for $7k…

On my first trip over I found my Elk Sustainar at TC Gakki, they had a lot back then (2017), I went again in 2018 and found an Ace Tone Fuzzmaster FM-2 in a store in Ochanomizu (Guitar street), but that was among endless guitar shops that mostly had all the same kind of inventory and got pretty repetitive pretty quickly... gems and deals can be found if you have the patience and stamina! Though the stores are far more aware of the value and are mostly all on Reverb too these days, wasn't the case in 2017... best of luck!
