The Black Angels

Post by gururyan »

Just got home from the Black Angels show, got some good shots. Anyway, here is the setlist...straight off the, well...setlist.

Mission District
The Sniper at the Gates of Heaven
Black Grease
Better Off
Science Killer
Young Men Dead
You In Color
You On the Run
The Return
Empire

"Science Killer" was definitely THE song/performance of the night. All you mates on the other side of the pond, head's up...our Austin friends of fuzz are headed your way.

(pics from show as time permits, likely tomorrow evening at the earliest)

Guess not many are familiar with them. Well, if you take Explosions in the Sky and the Black Keys and toss in what the Brian Jonestown Massacre wish they were...you'd get the Black Angels.

i saw them last year in back of a Thai restaurant in Ventura.
Good shit! Psychedelic light show...
3 old film projectors running (old war footage) + oldschool oil w food coloring
on an overhead projector slide...undulating shapes a-la 1967.
Their stuff is pretty reminiscent of the 1st VU LP...

I bought their first EP, Black Grease, when it came out and dug the title track, but when I got the album it didn't do much for me. I prefer Dungen to these guys.

Seriously incredible fuzz tones here.

Although they tour as a full band, the music produced by Dungen is the work of one man -- the young Gustav Ejstes. In 2005, the label Subliminal Sounds heard Ejstes' remarkably powerful, melodic take on hard psychedelia and gave the album Ta Det Lungt a small round of distribution on the American shores. The result was a huge wave of press, completely oversold club shows, and major label interest -- all for an act that prides itself on conjuring up the days of gatefold album sleeves and incense with their riff-heavy rock and idyllic folk interludes. Let us pray that bare feet and afros aren't far behind.

Interesting. They have this ethereal melody that is reminiscent of Ride, but with lots of fuzz. Too bad I can't understand a single word they are saying. Mmmmm Ride, I'm going to go put on Going Blank Again.

Ride! I'm a big fan. Just scored their debut album as well as Carnival of Light on vinyl recently. Now we're on the same page.

BTW, I just happened to upload the newest Dungen album and the new album by the Aliens, so have at it:
