FS 1977 "op amp" Big Muff clone

Post by John Lyons »

Here we have a '77 Op amp big muff clone.

Differences between this circuit and the classic big muff circuit:
A wider usable gain range. Most Big Muffs sound best at full sustain, or at least
3/4 of the way up. Turning them down sound dull and lifeless.
The Op Amp muff sound alive and present at all sustain settings.
Dialing in lower gain settings retains the same overall tone.

The tone knob has a wider sweet spot. The treble side isn't as trebly and the
bass side isn't as dark.

The overall tone and feel is a bit more on the distortion side dynamically. It's definitely a fuzz but it responds better to picking dynamics and has a nice edge to it that really cuts through a mix. Less mid cut I'd say as well.

$160 shipped, priority. Paypal is best for me.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Did you build this pedal? What's your return policy?

Thanks for the nod Ed!

Yes, I built it. If something goes wrong with it
I'll fix it. That's about the only return policy I have.

It uses a dual op amp and a single op amp.
The dual is a Texas Instruments RC4558P and the
single is an National Semiconductor LM471CN.

They are common ICs. There isn't much mojo
in ICs compared to discrete transistors or Germanium
devices. They sound good...the main thing...
