FY-2 Advice

I love my Kimbara FY-2 - the sound, the wedginess of the box, its battle scars, almost everything, even the smell.
Most of you probably know what's coming next........the volume drop.

I've seen a few clones out there and some of them say that they have mods which mean it can go "one louder".
Anyone tried them out at all - any good?
I've read somewhere that if this circuit is modded in such a way then these magic little units lose that unique sound.

Obviously I could go down the loop and booster route but I'd rather have just the one pedal rather than 3 boxes and loads of cable.

So, if anybody knows about these modded pedals your experience would be much appreciated.
